Graphic forms and natural textures create a bold kitchen in a minimalist extension

Having commissioned a rear extension in a clean-lined, contemporary style, the client turned to Uncommon Projects to design an ordered, unfussy kitchen that would complement the minimalist aesthetic and contrast with the more traditional style elsewhere in the home, while being practical and hard-working enough to meet the demands of a busy family.

The cabinets were designed as distinct blocks, with base units, wall units, tall units and a central island coming together to give the kitchen a strong graphic look. Doors are finished in Fenix NTM in matt black, which creates a striking contrast with both the white Corian worktops and the units’ exposed ply edges.

Wall units and island storage are fitted with sliding cork-veneer doors, introducing a note of warmth to the space. In line with the island, the larder cupboard is fitted with pocket doors, allowing the owners to store breakfast and baking gear out of site, minimising clutter.

As well as the induction hob, the island worktop extends beyond the unit to create a breakfast bar, with two Uncommon Project-designed Y Stools in complementary veneered ply, echoing the kitchen’s cork accents in the veneered seat, and the Fenix doors in the black steel footrest.
